Turrialba Volcano

   Volcan Turrialba stands 10, 950 feet high. Recently the volcano has shown some activity, but it was especially active in the 1860s, demonstrating some violence. Volcan Turrialba Nation Park protects five square miles that are almost all cloud forest. Dirt roads stop a few miles from the top of the volcano. From there you have to hike on trails. It is a strenuous hike so check your endurance level before you start. There is also a trail that leads down to the floor of a crater. Because of recent activity, these hikes may not be advisable. Check with rangers in the area.

This is a volcano visit for those looking for a little adventure. It is off the beaten path and not easy access to say the least. If you visit on a clear day it is well worth the bumpy ride to the top but if you see there are clouds you might want to save it for your next Costa Rica vacation.

If the Turrialba volcano is a little too active for your taste no need to worry because some of the best rivers in the country are located in the area. The famous Pacaure river can give you a Costa Rica whitewater rafting experience you will not forget.
